Feng Shui Success for Restaurants: Menu, Sound, Colour and Light

Using feng shui practices and techniques in a restaurant can increase its appeal to customers. Four main areas to look at include menu choices, sound, colour and lighting. Use good feng shui to design a seasonal menu, encourage positive sounds, and match the light and colours to the type of restaurant. It’s believed that the balance of these factors will ensure success.

Match the Menu to the Season, Follow the Cycle of Nature for Restaurant Success

Feng shui practitioners believe that using cooking styles and ingredients that follow the energies of the season is more compatible with the energy of the human body. By going with that energy rather than opposing it, clients will find their dining experience more harmonious. Among suggestions by feng shui experts at Spirit for Design are:

  • Serve cold soups, salads and lighter fare in the spring and summer;
  • In winter, serve heavier more nourishing foods. Examples include thick golden pumpkin soup and hearty bean casseroles. This type of fare will harmonize the stomach, spleen and kidneys, giving restaurant patrons a sense of comfort and wellness during cold weather. Adapt the actual food to the restaurant’s image and clientele; and
  • In the fall, look to foods that mimic the golds, oranges, reds and browns of that season.

An overly noisy restaurant or one in which patrons can hear conversations at nearby tables does not encourage people to dine in style. Since the flow of chi is so fast, patrons will eat quickly, skipping dessert in order to leave quickly and they may never return. To keep sounds pleasant, experts have devised these feng shui tips.

  • Use sound absorbing material on the floors, walls, chairs and ceiling. Rugs, drapes, upholstered chairs and acoustical tiles or baffles will all help to absorb sound.
  • Place tables a little further apart to also allow customers to be able to talk without worrying about overhearing others or being overheard.
  • Use a water feature or soft music to add soothing background noise, masking conversations and relaxing people.

Feng Shui Decorating: Using Colour to Attract Positive Chi and Harmony for Guests

Restaurants are all about food and appetite. Choose colours that complement food rather than compete with it to maintain balance and harmony.

  • Use warm colours for interior design, including upholstery, drapes, walls, tablecloths, menus and plates. Red, orange and yellow as well as more neutral shades of brown, cream, and white are considered good colours for restaurants. White is associated with cleanliness, yellow with appetite, red with excitement and the heart’s desire.

  • While some feng shui experts also suggest avoiding green, Shan-Tung Hsu of the Blue Mountain Feng Shui Institute disagrees. He points out that as people become more conscious of healthy diets, green is increasing associated with nature and freshness, earning a positive place in feng shui restaurant design.

Use Proper Lighting to Encourage the Flow of Chi for Good Feng Shui Restaurant Design

Lighting is an important aspect of restaurants. It can affect the flow of chi and stimulate or dampen appetite.

  • Use yellow-based lighting rather than more blue-based lighting to stimulate appetite.
  • Match the level of lighting to the time of day and ambiance of the restaurant. Use brighter light during lunch time when people generally have less time to eat. Use dimmer lights in the evening when people want more of a romantic or dining experience.
  • While non-feng shui practitioners like wide open spaces with lots of windows, that goes against good feng shui practice as it can distract patrons from their food. According to Shan-Tung Hsu of the Blue Mountain Feng Shui Institute, “if there are windows at the back with an expansive view, it does not retain energy and does not retain business.” Use curtains to block some of the expanse or place crystals in the windows to slow down the flow of chi.

The restaurant business is a difficult one – both in attracting customers and keeping them coming back. Using good feng shui practices and techniques, as recommended by feng shui consultants, can improve a restaurant’s chances for success.
